The Eutin Festival is on the verge of a historical caesura: for the first time since 1951 it will not present any performances on the lake stage in summer.
What a pity: The Eutin Festival has to cancel all performances of the 2020 season due to the Corona crisis. Learn more
There are several reasons for the new programme next year. The first one is directly related to the history of our main opera "Der Freischütz". Under the direction of the composer Carl Maria von Weber, this work was first performed in June 1821 in the Konzerthaus on Berlin's Gendarmenmarkt - 200 years later, we feel a tradition-conscious obligation to present an attractive production of the opera "Der Freischütz" on this anniversary.
Just as our 2021 opera season planning for 2021 is determined by the "Freischütz" anniversary, there are binding copyright regulations for musicals. These are usually taken care of by publishers and are particularly sought after in the case of Bernstein's "West Side Story". Since the end of 2017 we have been trying to get permission to show the musical in Eutin. Finally we have received the promise for 2021 - we would like to use this laboriously achieved performance right. Because it is not said that we can expect to be granted it again a year later.
We also have to negotiate freshly about the rights for a new season for "Ein Käfig voller Narren". Should this work out for one of the coming seasons, we would also like to include "Madama Butterfly" in our programme again. Firstly, the demand for both plays was promising, secondly, the sets for both works are coordinated and almost completely produced. But for "Freischütz" or "West Side Story" they wouldn't fit, for these plays a completely different set construction has to be designed.
