Madama Butterfly

Madama Butterfly
The Opera on the Lake Stage Eutin

Giacomo Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" is one of the most successful operas in the world. Deeply touching, it shows a tragedy of love against the background of cultural strangeness between the Far East and the West.

The plot in brief: A young Japanese woman succumbs to the charm of a dashing US naval officer, but what she thinks is the love of her new life is only an exotic adventure for him. But one with dramatic consequences: The feeling disgraced Geisha commits harakiri and leaves the common son to the officer, who returned to Japan carefree with his American wife.

Puccini's opera was first performed in Italy in 1904. At that time, Asia was still a largely unknown world for the industrial nations, which seemed to be economically and civilizingly superior. The composer masterfully incorporated this strangeness into his usual touching melody with Far Eastern sounds.

At the Eutin Festival Puccini's masterpiece was first on the programme in 1999. For the 70th season on the Seebühne, Prof. Igor Folwill will be staging the opera in the original Italian version; Hilary Griffiths, Artistic Director Classical Music at the Festspiele, will be the musical director.
