Born in Westphalia, he receives his education at the Hamburg School of Entertainment. Following engagements at the Companions Opera Amsterdam and the Hamburg State Opera, he is an ensemble member of the seasonal theatre Das Sternenzelt in Hamburg, where he appears in productions such as Aladin, Die Schatzinsel, Robin Hood and Der Zauberer von Oz. On German stages and abroad Alexander Ruttig sings, plays and dances in Closer Than Ever and Aida, in Tosca, Träume and Maria Stuart. In 2011 he travels the world as a soloist on board the cruise ship MS Amadea. At the Stadttheater Lübeck he is cast in Sunset Boulevard, in the operetta Ball im Savoy and in Lionel Bart's musical Oliver! after Charles Dickens. In 2018 he gives the Riff in West Side Story at the Festival Clingenburg in Bavaria and stands as Templar in Nathan the Wise on stage.

The Korean baritone Hyunkyum Kim won the Eutin Festival prize of honour. Hilary Griffiths, Artistic Director Classical Music at the Festival, congratulated the 28-year-old singer on this success in the finale of the Maritim Music Prize.
