Hilary Griffiths

Hilary Griffiths is very familiar to the Eutin audience: from 1991 to 2006 he was music director of the Eutin Festival, conducted over 200 performances on the sea stage, many gala evenings and also special concerts. Most recently in 2010, he performed Beethoven's 9th Symphony on the occasion of the festival's 60th anniversary.

Hilary Griffiths was born in England. He studied mathematics in Oxford, music in London, Siena and Milan, and won several international conducting competitions. His first engagement led him to Cologne as Kapellmeister, where he conducted over 300 opera performances and served as director of the Opera Studio. He was then Music Director at the Theater Oberhausen, General Music Director of the City of Regensburg and Chief Conductor at the Prague State Opera, Professor at the Mannheim Academy of Music and Chief Conductor and Musical Director of the Wuppertal Theatres.

His concerts and opera performances have taken him to Berlin, Dresden, Hanover, Düsseldorf, Wiesbaden, Dortmund, Bremen, Nuremberg and Basel as well as Barcelona, the Hague, Eindhoven, Rotterdam, Oslo, Reykjavik, Bogotá, Leeds and Tokyo, and to the festivals of Edinburgh, Camden, Schwetzingen, Wiesbaden, Würzburg, Gmunden, Prague, Litomyšl, Tenerife, Miskolc, Hong Kong, Perth and New York (Lincoln Center Festival).

At the Tenerife Opera Festival he conducted Il matrimonio segreto, Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Un ballo in maschera, Rigoletto and Madama Butterfly. Other recent productions include Erwartung for the Prague Spring Festival, Porgy & Bess at the Istanbul State Opera and thirteen new productions at the Prague State Opera, including Salome, I vespri siciliani, Tannhäuser and the Czech premiere of Tod in Venice (Britten).

In 2017 he conducted several symphony concerts, Rigoletto and Nabucco for the Prague State Opera, a new production of Otello with Willy Decker in Bogotá, Don Giovanni for the University of Georgia, U.S.A. and Il barbiere di Siviglia for English National Opera in London. In 2019 he returns to the Cologne Opera with My Fair Lady.
