Bei den Eutiner Festspielen gibt es einen ungeplanten Personalwechsel: Aus gesundheitlichen Gründen legt Hardy Rudolz sein Amt als Musicalchef nieder.
This was announced by Managing Director Falk Herzog in a press release on Monday, August 5.
Herzog: "The opera remains a matter of the heart for the Festspiele in a tradition-conscious way. But we are also determined to continue the path we took in 2018, to arouse fresh visitor interest in Eutin with contemporary musicals."
According to him, the selection of works for the musical theatre should offer a programme rich in contrasts. What both pieces have in common, however, is that they deal very effectively with the confrontation with foreign worlds - an unchanged current theme in the history of mankind, Herzog said, also from the vantage point of the Festspiele.
The opera by Giacomo Puccini, which premiered in Milan in 1904, shows the tragedy of a geisha who breaks up in her love for a US naval lieutenant who was easygoing in Japan. The melodramatic work was first performed in Eutin 20 years ago; "Madama Butterfly" will be played in Italian in 2020. The production is directed by the experienced opera director Igor Folwill, who has also worked for many years as a university professor for Scenic Rehearsal and Direction at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne.
"La Cage aux Folles" will again be staged by Hardy Rudolz, since 2018 musical director at the festival. In a comedic way, the piece reflects the family troubles of a homosexual couple from the travesty business, the most famous melody being the cult hit "I am what I am". Like the musical composed in 1983 by Jerry Herman, the movie "La Cage aux Folles" was an international box-office hit.
In addition to the two stage works, the festival is planning two concerts in gala format on the Seebühne next year and, on a smaller scale, another opera project for young people. "The 70th season will also take place in the Schlossgarten in 2020. We want to celebrate this with a special opening program on the musical tracks of Carl Maria von Weber," Herzog announced.
Detailed information on all dates and ticket sales will be available at the end of the current season.
